NK (2004.11.9): Tiwari's effigies burnt, massive UMM & UKD rally

[India News]: Gairsain (Uttaranchal), Nov 9 : For two days, Uttaranchal has been ablaze with effigies of Chief Minister N.D. Tiwari protesting his suggestion that citizens “forget” the killing of 12 people during an agitation for creating the state.

On the fourth anniversary of the state’s founding Tuesday, the Mahila Manch, a leading women’s organisation, took out a procession and besieged the chief minister’s residence here to protest the statement.

The state’s largest regional party, the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal, held a massive rally here to press the popular demand to make this town, which lies at the state’s geographical centre, its permanent capital.

A hunger strike being staged here on the capital issue entered its 46th day Tuesday. [more]
