The closure of last diversion tunnel of the controversial 2400 MW Tehri hydel project, that had blocked the Bhagirathi river waters, has sparked fresh anger among residents in areas around the dam site.
Renowned environmentalist Sunder Lal Bahuguna, who opposed the dam on seismic grounds, is also upset with the latest developments and has shaved off his beard in protest.
“They have blocked Bhagirathi river. So the river is dead now,” said Bahuguna.
People are gathering in the nearby hills daily to express their anger with some of them shedding tears for their old Tehri town most of which has since disappeared into the 42 sq km dam reservoir.
