Dehradun, 8 Nov: The Uttarakhand Sanyukt Sangarsh Morcha (USSM) held a dharna at the gates of Gandhi Park today to press their demand for moving the capital of Uttaranchal to Gairsen. Various representatives of groups affiliated to the joint action front also spoke on the many problems confronting the state, from the privatisation of education and water to the lack of hill development and forest rights of village communities.
Coming a day ahead of State Formation Day, the general sense among the teach-in participants was a deep unease if not fear for the future of the state. More than once, the call to save Uttarakhand was given, especially in the face of issues such as seat delimitation and dam building that may permanently marginalise and disenfranchise hill people in what was supposed to be their own state.
