After tehri, the uttarakhand government is now faced with an agitation by those affected by the maneri bhali-phase-II hydro-electric project in Uttarkashi district.
For the past four days, four residents of Gayansoo town in Uttarkashi have taken refuge on an island in the middle of the Bhagirathi river. The villagers have started the unique agitation at a time when the officials were planning to fill the reservoir, with the project nearing completion. The agitators said they would not move out until work on the retaining walls of the reservoir were completed and all affected people paid compensation. [more]
