Project scrapped, villagers’ miseries remain

Life has become hell for people of eight villages badly affected by the construction of the 13-km tunnel and the scrapping of the Loharinag Pala hydro power project has not brought an end to their miseries, says a study conducted by the Raksha Sutra and Uttarakhand Nadi Bachao Andolan, Uttarkashi-based social and environmental organisation.

Not even once were the people of these villages told that their water sources, irrigation channels, forests, houses, cremation ghats, bathing ghats, etc, would be affected by the project. They were not given copies of the Environmental Impact Study of the project. “The decision has come too late. Why was the environment impact assessment not taken seriously and where do we go from here after losing everything?” asked Nathi Singh of Sungar village. [more]
