Trade union stir brings state to a halt

Dehradun, September 7

Employees and trade unions of various national and private banks, trade unions of both the CPI and the CPM, the Indian National Trade Union Congress, Uttarakhand Joint Trade Union, Centre of Indian Trade Union and Employees Union of SIDCUL, tea gardens, power sector, Jal Nigam, Jal Sansthan, Postal Department, anganwadi, ASHA organisation, defence industries, BSNL, Life Insurance Corporation and hotels participated in a one-day strike to press upon their demands, including minimum wages and other emoluments, effective public distribution system etc.

Elaborating on the basic demands of the union, Vijay Rawat, General Secretary (GS) of CPM, said, “We have demanded a tight leash on increasing prices of commodities, additional package for industries affected during the economic slowdown, effective enforcement of fundamental labour laws, constitution of a wage board and a committee to revisit minimum wages, to end the contract system, to provide basic financial and social security to employees and stop the public-private partnership system”.
