More than 65% of Tehri submerged in Bhagirathi


More than 65 per cent of old Tehri town was today inundated after the waters of Bhagirathi river reservoir of the 2400 mw Tehri hydel project rose sharply even as tension gripped the area with a handful of people refusing to leave the town.

The water level rose this evening to 351 meter, one meter more than yesterday’s level, with authorities evicting 20 people who had earlier refused to leave the area, officials said.

But a handful of people have still refused to come out of the Tehri town raising considerable tension in the area with district authorities deploying a large number of policemen to meet any eventuality. [more]
