BS: Uttaranchal project under CBI scanner

Our Regional Bureau / New Delhi/ Dehra Dun March 30, 2006
The controversial 304 Mw Maneri Bhali Hydel project II has run into trouble again with the Uttaranchal government announcing a CBI probe into the alleged financial irregularities and other corruption charges in connection with the construction of the power plant.

An announcement to this effect was made by Uttaranchal Power Minister Amrita Rawat in the assembly after the issue rocked the House with Uttarakhand Kranti Dal leader Kashi Singh Airy demanding a CBI probe into the matter.

Airy brought serious corruption charges against a senior government official and alleged he purchased cement worth Rs 25 crore without seeking permission.

Significantly, this is the only one mega project being constructed by the state government itself. All the remaining projects have either been given to central government enterprises like NTPC and NHPC or to private companies.
